it's a 3/8 Allen key
Up to about 1999, no. Only needed a large C clamp to push the piston back in the cylinger. After 2000 some rear brakes have the the screw type piston which requires you to un-screw the caliper back to the un-used pad position.
disc brakes are self adjusting unless the pads are bad or the caliper is bad.
This is how you will replace the front brakes on a 2000 Saturn Sc first you will jack the car up with jack stands. You will then remove the front wheels, next remove the upper caliper to mount bolt only. Then you will pivot the caliper downward to access the pads, you will remove the old pads and install the new pads. You will use a 'C' clamp and a old pad to bottom the caliper piston and you will pivot the caliper back into place and re-install the bolt.
Front disc brake caliper bleeder screw: between 13-18 ft. lbs
If rear brake caliper is used for emergency brakes also - piston is threaded and requires a special tool (not expensive available at Sears or auto parts) to screw into caliper housing
you have to take off your rim and tire, and your caliper.
Jack the front of the car up and put it on stands. REmove both front wheels. Take the 2 caliper bolts off the calipers. Move the piston back with a screwdriver. Remove the caliper from the rotor. Pull the pads and replace them. Installation is the reverse of the above steps.
To replace brake pads and rotor: Unbolt wheel, unbolt caliper, remove caliper, unbolt caliper bracket, remove rotor, replace rotor, bolt up bracket, compress caliper, replace pads, replace caliper, bolt up caliper, bolt up wheel, repeat whole thing on other side...
Its on all 4 wheels on the brake caliper.
Ours has 4-wheel disc and the rears are changed the same as the front ones. You must remove the caliper assemblies to install the new pads.
On a 2000 Ford Explorer : ( Yes , there are disc brakes , front and rear )
Begin by removing the tire and wheel from your 2000 Chevy Lumina. Remove the brake spring and the break caliper. The rear brakes will come off.
