I would say to first check what the label on the yarn ays for your project. However I know sometimes that isnt possible, so you have to make do. I would start with a size 5 knitting needles. First make a gauge swatch I knit about 20 stitches and about 15 to 20 rows, the measure how many stitches per inch I have. Depending on if your a tight or loose knitter you might have to go up or down a size or two.

In general the smaller a needle is the more stitches per inch you can make, the larger a needle is the less stitches.

What is the best number of stitches for knitting the Chevron stitch it says multiples of 8 plus 1 but I only want to knit a patch with this pattern and I'm not sure what's the best number to cast on?

The answer would depend on how wide you want your product to be. If you are using small diameter needles, you will need more stitches to work with than if you were using large needles. I normally use about 35 stitches to try out a pattern with.

How many stitches for knitting needle number 8 per inch?

The number of stitches you need per inch depends on the type of fabric you are sewing. The weight, thickness and type of fabric sewn will determine the stitch length you use. In a quilt, you will have fewer stitches, such a six or eight per inch. For a seam on clothing, a medium weight fabric will use 10 - 12 stitches, for heavier fabrics, 8 -10 will work better. In knitting and crochet, the stitches per inch are determined by the size of your needles, the tension you use when working the stitches, and the weight of the yarn or thread. The pattern you use will specify the stitches and needles you need, called the gauge.

How do you knit an I- cord?

Using a pair of double pointed needles, cast on 4 stitches. Instead of turning and knitting back the other direction, slide all four stitches to other opposite end of the needle and knit into the first stitch that you cast on. Knit the rest of the stitches on the needle. Slide them down to the opposite end and repeat. You are knitting in the round on a very small scale. Bind off as you would in the round. My aunt makes custom shoelaces by knitting I-Cord with number 10 crochet thread. -smcm

What is interweave knitting?

Interweave knitting is also known as Afghan stitches or Tunisian Crochet. It is a way of crocheting using one hook and adapted knitting techniques. The finished fabric you create looks as if it has been knitted, but in fact has been crocheted. There are many stitches and patterns to bring about very unique fabrics.

How many stitches per inch using number 7 US knitting needles?

Stitches per inch on size 10 needles varies greatly, because some people knit tighter or looser than others, causing the finished material to be bigger or smaller for different people, depending on how tightly or loosely they knit.Because everyone's tightness in knitting is different, something was created for knitters long ago called gauge. Gauge is another word for tightness of knitting, and most patterns will have the required gauge to make that project, that way you won't end up with a hat three times larger than it aught to be. Most of those patterns will have a suggested needle size to acquire the correct gauge, but this is only a suggestion to give an idea of ABOUT what size to use.

Using plastic storage bins for your knitting notions?

A craft store, like Hobby Lobby or Joann's Fabrics has a variety of items for organizing knitting needles. Depending on the length of the various knitting needles, you might be able to gather them in a Pringles can if you don't want to purchase a roll-up organizer.

How do you crochet cables and lace broom stick pattern?

It is a form of knitting using broomsticks as needles. In modern times the broomsticks are replaced by oversized knitting needles. The method is most common in making afghans and lace where large loopy stitches are desired. Although the tool used does resemble a knitting needle, I classify broomstick lace in crochet. However, I think it is really a blend of the two. You begin by making a row of chain stitches, but the loops are kept on the hook like in knitting, but then are worked off with a crochet hook. You can find videos demonstrating the method at YouTube and also web sites with instructions that show pictures. I like to use the #50 needle, but broomstick lace can be worked with smaller needles as well.

How do you add new yarn when using Flaunt loops and threads?

What is the difference in crochet and interweave crochet?

Both techniques differ in the tool used. Knitting uses needles which hold "rows" of live stitches, whereas traditional crochet uses a single hook for the one live stitch. The resulting fabric is different in weight and overall appearance. Crochet fabric is thicker and stronger than knitted fabric, even using the same yarn and same size hook/needles. The difference comes from the fact that even the simplest crochet stitch is made of 2 loops, wrapped around one or two strands of yarn, and knitted stitches are a single loop in a single previous loop (single strand of yarn).

Do you cast on both of your needles in knitting?

Generally you cast on using one needle, but you can position both needles parallel to each other and cast on as you would with one needle. This gives you a broader, looser base for your work.
