The starter is sized by amperage of the motor. The first thing that has to be done is find the the current by using this formula for amperage when the HP is known. I = HP x 746/1.73 x E x %eff x pf.

A standard motor's efficiency between 5 to 100 HP is .84 to .91.

A standard motor's power factor between 10 to 100 HP is .86 to .92.

Amps = 5 x 746 = 3730/1.73 x 208 = 3730/360 x .84 x .84 = 3730/ 254 = 14.68 amps

A three phase size 1 magnetic starter is rated for 27 amps and can be used up to 7.5 HP.

If the voltage was 460 to 575 a size 0 could be used.

Disadvantages of a squirrel cage motor?

Squirrel Cage Induction Motor Disadvantages:Some of disadvantages or demerits of squirrel cage induction motors are listed below:Main disadvantage of squirrel cage induction motor is that they have poor starting torque and high starting currents. Starting torque will be in the order of 1.5 to 2 times the full load torque and starting current is as high as 5 to 9 times the full load current. In slip ring induction motors, higher starting torque can be attained by providing an external resistance in the rotor circuits during starting of the slip-ring induction motor. This arrangement in slip-ring induction motors also reduces the high inrush currents during starting of induction motor.Squirrel cage induction motors are more sensitive to the supply voltage fluctuations. When the supply voltage is reduced, induction motor draws more current. During voltage surges, increase in voltage saturates themagnetic components of the squirrel cage induction motor.Speed control is not possible in squirrel cage induction motor. This is one of the major diadvantages of squirrel cage induction motors. The total energy loss during starting of squirrel cage motor is more compared to slip ring motors. This point is significant if the application involves frequent starting

What are disadvantages of bldc motors?

1. A squirrel cage Induction motor is lesser costlier than electrical drive because of using coverters and control circuits . 2. Technology for dc drives is improved compared to ac drive 3. It is not reliable

What is vf speed control?

It is used for sensorless motor control. With vf speed control u can control speed of any induction motor.

What is the function of ACtoAC convertor in doubly fed induction generator?

The Doubly Fed Indcution Generator (DFIG) is a very popular machine, since the output of the stator terminals is already at 60hz (no change in voltaje or frequency necessary). The matrix converter is used in the rotor side (wound rotor) in order to control the frequency and voltage magnitud to make the induction machine generate power at a wide range of speeds...

How do you make a control panel to change the rotation of three phase induction motor?

The control panel will be based around a set of reversing magnetics. Depending on how you want to control the mags will depend on what type of peripheral equipment you will need to add to the control panel.

What is an inducting motor?

induction motor has two control system one is stator control another rotor control And it comes under the category of asynchronous motors. The term induction is because the rotor of an a.c motor does not receive the electric power through conduction but by induction same as the secondary of the transformer receives the power from primary. And so an induction motor can also be called as a rotating transformer i.e. one in which primary is stationary and secondary is free to rotate.

How Synchronous motor work with principal?

A synchronous motor comprises of a stator windings and a rotor with a squirrel cage and inside that is windings(coils). At starting, this motor is an induction motor running with slip. After the rotor has reached a certain speed, a DC current is applied to the windings inside the squirrel cage. A fixed field is induced in these windings. This field locks in with the synchronous rotating magnetic flux of the stator windings. The rotating stator windings then pull the rotor along. The amount of excitation current can be used to control the power factor of the motor, making this a popular type of motor for high power use with a constant mechanical load.
