Its not about size, its about controls. If the unit has a control board with IC chips, it uses a glow plug. If it uses mechanical switches, as most older units do, it will have a pilot.

When the circulation of water in a boiler is by a centrifugal pump then the boiler is known as?

externally fired

Radiators are cold on second floor source of heat is a oil fired boiler?

The fuel does not matter, it would be more relevant to post if you are hot water or steam, that is where your problem lies. If steam try raising the boiler cutout pressure a little bit and if hot water look at the boiler pressure, does the pump work, is the coupling broken and do you have air in the system that needs to be bled?

What effect will blocked flue have on the boiler?

The combustion air will not be able to go out the chimney. Since it has to go somewhere it will leak out the boiler into the boilerroom. If the boiler is air tight the pressure inside the boiler furnace will become high enough that the air will surge or run backwards out the forced air fan. This could lead to combustion outside the boiler, explosion or at least filling the boiler room with smoke and poisonous gasses. The flue on our gas fired hot water system once became jammed shut. It was the smell of incomplete combustion that alerted me to a problem. If it had happened when everyone was asleep or no one was home, the house would have filled with carbon dioxide.

What points in the energy flow through power plant that might produce unwanted forms of energy and make the plant less efficient?

Let's consider a coal-fired power plant. Here we have a boiler that burns coal to produce steam. The boiler radiates heat and this radiant heat loss causes an efficiency penalty - about 1% of the energy in the coal is lost in radiation. Moisture that was in the coal to start with (and even moisture in the air because of humidity) gets heated up in the boiler but does not contribute to the process of combustion. This also causes and efficiency loss. Instead of being properly burned up un the furnace, some of the coal particles just fall to the bottom of the furnace, and is collected along with the ash. The steam that the boiler produced goes to a turbine that spins like a fan because of the pressure in the steam. The turbine drives a generator that produces the electricty that comes out of the power plant. Both the turbine and boiler have some losses due to friction, but the main loss in the turbine is the energy in the steam leaving the exhaust of the turbine. Because we want to condense this steam back into water so we can re-use it for supplying the boiler, the energy lost from the exhaust of the turbine actually makes its way to the cooling tower before being rejected into the atmosphere. It seems inefficienct to do it this way, but it's the best method we have at the moment.

How does an oil fired boiler work?

In central heating extremely hot oil is circulated through pipes/tubing - in contact with the appliance (in this case a boiler). Pretty simple. This method is used for economic reasons. Its usually the cheapest way to deliver heat. X $ amount per calorie (heat delivered) factoring in reliability of the equipment/operational labor, etc.Oil fired boilersWork on the same principle as any other fuel burning boiler. Many one family homes use #2 oil gas well as multi family homes and commercial establishments as the flame produced by natural gas hovers between 900 -1,200 BTU per cubic foot and # 2 oil produces 138,000 -140,000 Per Gallon of fuel burned thus oil heats faster than many other fuels with the added protection that in case of a leak Oil will burn but not explode as propane or natural gas fuel. Many localities do not have gas lines installed and electric is very expensive for boiler use . In the UK oil is stored in an outside tank, it is then fed (gravity) to a boiler which burns at a controlled rate to heat the water in the tank. The water is then pumped round to radiators, which radiate heat into the rooms to the desired temperature. Oil boilers can be situated either internally or externally.

How does a gas boiler work and what is it used for?

A gas fired boiler is a product used to heat your water for homes as well as swimming pools, they are very ifficient and save energy thus lowering your electric bill. There is a down side to having a gas fired boiler being as the costs of gases has gone up greatly it would be harder to keep a gas fired boiler going for a middle class person

What is a tangentially fired boiler?

A tangentially fired boiler has between 4 and 8 burners, placed in the corners of the boiler. These are sometimes angled vertically to maximize impingement of the flames. They are fired into the center of the boiler, not directly into the center, but at the wall to adjacent to them. This causes the flames to swirl inside of the boiler, causing an even distribution of flame throughout the boiler. This is shown pretty well here: http://www.alstom.com/power/coal-oil/utility-boilers/firing-systems This website also has a lot more detail than previously provided.
