Normally if mailing with the USPS it is now .45 cents (you can purchase Forever Stamps which will be good forever even with a postal rate increase) as long as it is not overweight or bigger than the average size office envelope. A standard rate stamp (.45) will take a letter anywhere in the continental US, regardless of the zip code. (keeping in mind the size and weight)
If it is a first class letter (less than 1 ounce) all you need is one stamp. You can send first class letter mail anywhere in the United States for one stamp.
All you need is ONE first class postage stamp. Provided that it's only a letter.
Stamps are not based on distance, but rather on weight. Therefor, 1 stamp should be plenty of postage for a standard letter.
One 41 cent stamp for a letter that weighs no more than an ounce, until May of 2008, then they will go up to 42 cents.

3 Just one stamp will do it for a normal letter.
The stamp has to be accepted where you mail the letter. If you are mailing in Canada, you need a Canadian stamp. If you are in the US mailing to Canada, you can use a US stamp.
About one liberty stamp :)
The reason you need a stamp to mail a letter is because the stamp is the proof that you paid for your letter to be delivered. Instead of paying the mailman directly, and waiting for him to come to your house so you can pay the mailman to deliver your mail, the stamp proves that you paid for the delivery of the mail.
