A good general education, especially in the sciences, along with knowledge of a broad range of treatment modalities and how to provide them, and training and experience in their use. A good clinical psychologist should also have a good "feel" for people, and good empathy -- but combined with the ability to remain detached enough to not be drawn in to the patient's problems. Those who lack the latter qualities should probably stick to the more theoretical areas such as research.
