It depends. Pentium 4 processors came right as Intel began to change from what is called Pin Grid Array (the processor has several hundred pins on the bottom) to Land Grid Array (the CPU socket has pins which contact the processor). Older Pentium 4 processors run on PGA Sockets 423 and 478, which are no longer found on mainstream motherboards, but the newer Pentium 4's were built for the LGA 775 socket, which can be found on some new motherboards.

This socket was introduced in August 2001 as replacement for short-lived socket 423. The socket 478 supports desktop and mobile Pentium 4 and Celeron processors from 1.4 GHz to 3.46 GHz with effective front-side bus frequencies 400 MHz - 1066 MHz (100 MHz - 266 MHz QDR). This socket was phased out in favour of socket 775 (LGA775).

There are different architectures for the Pentium 4's that why they used more then one socket, and not one, as stated above.
