SS stands for Schutzstaffel (German, lit: "Defense corps"). They were founded in 1934 originally as Hitler's protection unit, but eventually branched off into very specific tasks within the Reich. A few examples:
Waffen-SS: Elite military force composed of conscripted men from conquered territories.
Einsatzgruppen: A particularly unpleasant branch of the SS, they were essentially "death squads" that oversaw the murder of nearly 1,000,000 Jews and other "enemies of the Reich" from 1939-1945.
Geheime Staatspolizei: Better known as the Gestapo, they were the Nazi secret police, performing raids on persons suspected of harbouring Jews or other "enemies of the Reich."
