Sweet Oil, available at most pharmacies, will loosen ear wax. Put in a couple drops and repeat for extreme cases. The ear canal needs to have a protective covering of earwax so don't get carried away with it.
Do not probe the ear canal with any object because you can rupture the eardrum. As the wax softens from the oil treatment you wipe the ear with a tissue.
