The Swiss Guard defends the Vatican. They are not simply a bunch of guys dressed up in medieval costumes for the benefit of tourists---they are a highly trained security force. Among their duties are guarding Vatican personnel and guarding the treasures in the Vatican museums. The electronic security and the humidity control in the museums are their responsibility.
