I personally have no actual experience with Tibetan Monks, but I have heard stories from those who have actually witnessed and lived with them. Its extraordinary once you get used to it I've heard. It takes a lot of self discipline and a lot of will power. At first, it's difficult, but it's worth it. I was told you become enlightened. I was also told by one that you have to fast sometimes. Basically, its hard at first and will test your dedication, self discipline, and edurance. If you can master these, you become enlightened and come out a better person. This is a basic answer. You may get more detailed ones later on from those who have done it.

This is a very broad question, which I will try to answer as briefly as possible.

Lay Buddhists live pretty much like other people. A practicing lay Buddhist (upaska) follows at least the Five Noble Precepts. In addition, they try to follow the teachings of the Buddha as best as they can.

Monks are supposed to follow all of the rules in the Vinaya, the collection of rules for monks and nuns. There are over 200 basic rules, and another 800 or so minor rules. Following these rules leads to a very moral and simple life. Probably the most obvious differences about a monk from a Buddhist layperson is that a Vinaya-following monk is celibate, wears robes, shaves his head, doesn't eat after noon, and doesn't touch money. Some monks spend much of their time meditating in solitude in the forest, whereas other monks live in temples in the city and spend their time teaching laypeople and providing services for them, such as visiting people in the hospital, etc. Generally monks do not prepare their own food, laypeople bring and serve them their meals. Some monks go from house to house in the village in the morning on alms rounds. People will put food in their bowls, which the monks will bring back to their temple.

Having said this, there is great variation in the strictness in which monks follow the Vinaya. Some monks are very strict, and others live much like laypeople, except that they live in temples and are celibate. Some of this depends on what denomination, or lineage, the monks belong to. For example, the monks in many traditions do touch money and do have three meals a day. Some monks live in the forest and spend a lot of time doing silent meditation, and some monks spend most of their time performing rituals that their specific traditions have developed.

Monks in almost all temples will assemble at least once or twice a day and recite teachings of the Buddha.

Not necessarily. Many religions have monks. Monks are people who withdraw from ordinary life to pursue their religious beliefs on a daily basis. So you can have Christian monks, Buddhist monks, Hindu monks, etc. Islam does not have a similar tradition though.

Can monks live a modern life?

.Catholic AnswerIn the twenty-first century, there are all kinds of monks. Most Benedictine monks live a thoroughly modern life. They still wear a habit, basically unchanged for centuries, although lighter and more simple than earlier habits. Their diet is little different than anybody else, they teach school, work in parishes, etc. Carthusians, who are more hermits than monks, live a very austere life, not so modern. But both of them are Catholics, not Amish, so they use electricity, etc. The only thing that is not "modern" about any of the religious orders, is that they are genuinely trying to lead a religious life based on the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. These three vows are about as far away as you can get from "modern" values as can be imagined. In that way, no they cannot live a modern life without ceasing to be monks.
