Mary Shelley was an author, most commonly known for writing Frankenstein. It is widely believed that Mary Shelly's Frankenstein was actually written on sort of a dare. While vacationing in Switzerland with Lord Byron, Mary and her future husband Percy Shelly and friends were housebound during inclement weather. To entertain themselves, they began talking, telling each other stories. The dare comes about when Lord Byron challenged the members of the group to see who could create a supernatural tale. Mary Shelly had a nightmare as a result of the ghost stories and began to draft Frankenstein the next day.
People usually think a man had written the story. Mary Shelley was on vacation with a trio of friends, and all being the creative sort, they decided to each write a short story to pass the time on a stormy night. Her story won their little competition.
Frankenstein would be the colour of the average inhabitant of Switzerland. You have perhaps confused Frankenstein with Frankensteins Creature. The creature is often portrayed as being green, which is not how he is described in the book. You could imagine he would have the colour of a recently deceased person. A sort of pallid, watery complexion.
Few movie writers can resist doing violence to novelists' work. The movie Frankenstein is effectively a completely different story from the one Shelley wrote. Notably, the monster of the book (Frankenstein is the doctor) was articulate, multilingual, a smooth talker; the movie monster was sort of an idiot.
Mary Shelley was influenced by "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" for a few reasons. These include both books involving alienation, both being about existentialism, and Shelley being friends with the author Coleridge.
Mary Shelley's novel is considered the first work of science fiction, but if you search it for science or technology -- for information on how the monster was brought to life -- you won't find anything. All those whirring machines and sparking generators were added to the story by Hollywood. The Frankenstein myth can apply to every sort of human quest for knowledge. But it's especially linked to genetic engineering today, because it is a story about humans creating human life.
Faust ( which means Fist!) in German is a pioneer occult novel- a scientist sells his soul to the Devil- sort of starting out the mad scientist genre with occult leanings. There was a play and an opera based on this tragical character. Oddly the opera was written by Charles Gounod, who is better known for Hymns! Oh, Beat the Devil! The original Faust novel was contrived by German author Goethe.
Popular idea was he was either a Doctor or a Medical student- hence Doctor Frankenstein. Strictly speaking, it is a sort of courtesy rank, he is not described as Dr. Frankenstein in the novel.
In voodoo activities, dead bodies are supposedly brought back to life (reanimated) as slaves (zombies). In fact, it is unlikely that anyone actually dies, but rather is drugged and comatose. In popular horror, these zombies become cannibalistic killers, generating more zombies, but also many permanently dead victims. The classic story of reanimation is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, wherein a scientist creates a body from parts of corpses and restores life (of a sort) to the creature.
