A polar bear is a carnivore, and will mainly eat seals caught out on the icepack. If the prey is young and unprotected by adults, a hungry polar bear may attempt to isolate a young walrus from the herd, as an adult is too big. Narwal and beluga whales are sometimes trapped by ice and the whales are forced to keep a breathing hole open in the ice to breath. If a whale strays too close to the ice edge, a polar bear may try to catch the whale and haul it out of the water - sometimes being successful, but usually the attempt ends in failure.
When the ice has retreated, a hungry polar bear has been known to scavenge on carcases cast up on land from the sea.
