When growing up in Phoenix I went out into the desert shooting my .22 rifle. I heard a very loud hissing sound that lasted for 5 -10 seconds and then was repeated a short time later It took me a while to find out where it was coming from because it was probably 15 yards away from me and there was a lot of desert scrub brush. The Gila Monster was sitting on a large rock sunning itself like a rattler. It didnt run away from me but was letting me know it didnt like me being there. I have never heard anything like it since and to this day the memory still gives me the creeps.
