How do steam trains work?

Steam trains relay on three major factors: coal( or anything that burns), fire and water. The coal, from the tender, keeps the fire burning or you could use a wood or a gas such as propane. The water gets heated by the fire like a pot of water on the stove. Them, the extra steam gets stored into a dome while the rest rushes down the boiler to the pistons. The pistons are what makes the wheels go round and round. There are two sets of pistons on each side and when the steam goes back and forth, you get a hissing sound. The left over steam is sent up the smoke stack. The throttle applies pressure to the steam which gives you the chuffing sound from the stack. From the stored steam in the dome, its used to make the whistle sound. The whistle is shaped to make a specific sound when applied pressure to, thus, the loud whistle sound. You tell this if you see steam comming out of the whistle. If you have anymore questions, go to my website. kimvrr.webs.com

Is thermal energy a form of energy?

Thermal ENERGY is used to power many things. One of the most common ways of getting thermal energy is by heating coal and other fuels to make smoke or steam, depending on what fuel is used. That smoke ( or steam, whatever) is travels to a turbine and makes it spin, which then powers a generator, thus supplying electricity. In some trains still, they feed coal into the engine to create more heat, and that powers the engine. Sorry about the lack of info on the train part, I'm not really that knowledgeable when it comes to trains.

How does fossil fuel work in a power plant?

Fossil fuel like coal or natural gas is brought to the power plant by trains. Then it is burned to heat water to make steam. The steam is under pressure and it wants to escape, so it is run through a turbine and the power of steam spins the turbine. The spinning turbine runs and electric generator that makes electricity.

What was James Watt's invention in the 1700s?

James Watt is known for his all important invention of the steam engine which lead to the invention of the locomotive and of the power plants.Even today's nuclear power plants apply the power of steam to make energy.

How is coal used to create power?

put the coal in a furnace and smelt stuffA more useful answerCoal is burnt to make heat, the heat is used to heat water, the water turns to steam and the steam turns a turbine that runs a generator. In ole ships the turbine or steam engine ran the propellers directly.

Are their modern day steam engine trains?

There are no longer any class 1 railroads operating steam engine trains on a regular basis. The Union Pacific Railroad maintains two operable steam engines and they make periodic special runs, and charters. The only other steam engines in operation today are on tourist railroads, there are a number of those around the country.

What noise does a train make?

It depends on the type of train and if they are approaching a crossing. Electric trains are much quieter than diesel trains which are quieter than steam trains. Also freight trains and passenger trains sound different. It really does depend on many factors.

Can a train run on steam?

Steam trains were once widespread, and changed the world. A steam engine is an external combustion engine, meaning that the fuel burns outside the engine. In modern internal combustion engines the petrol or diesel burns inside the engine, and the gases produced expand and push the cylinders, and this motion eventually turns the wheels. In the steam engine the fuel burns in an external fire box. The heat boils the water to make steam, which pushes the cylinders. So it depends exactly what you mean by 'run'. Certainly there were and are steam trains, but the steam doesn't provide the energy to make it go, the fuel does.

Trains Of Today?

Steam toys have been around for quite a long time. When parents think of steam toys, they usually think of trains. These are the most popular toys that have steam. Trains can be very elaborate in how the tracks are arranged and in the design of the trains themselves. Trains are more realistic today than they were years ago. Water is poured into the train to make steam as it rolls around the track in the home. Trains are appropriate for boys and girls to play with.
