The South American country of Colombia honors the memory of Christopher Columbus [August 25-October 31, 1451 - May 20, 1506]. For Columbus was the first European known to discover the New World, and by his discovery start the first permanent settling of the Anericas. Columbus isn't known to have landed on the subsequent Colombia. For the closest that Columbus is known to have gotten to the subsequent Republic is his navigation of the Caribbean Sea. Instead, it's Rodrigo de Bastidas [1460-July 28, 1527] who mapped the northern coast of South America, and founded the Colombian city of Santa Marta.
Colombia was named for Columbus, the explorer.
