If its a good after market headunit it should be ok, but an amp will always be the best idea.

The first one is headunit, it's better should have intenal power so you don't need an amplifier. Recommend you the Eonon's HU is quite good.http://www.eonon.com/2-Din-DVD-Player.html?utm_source=wiki.answers.com&utm_medium=answer&utm_campaign=answerPower stock speakers, you can look for bargain brandPower aftermarket speakers, any pioneer, alpine, blaupunkt, jvc, any of these will do that just fine.Power system, look into one that has at least 3 RCA outputs, so you can use an amp for front speakers, an amp for rear speakers and an amp for subwoofer.Power a competition system, then try to get one without alot of gizmos and internal power ( suggestions: McIntosh, Denon DCT-Z1, Eclipse 7200MKII, Clarion DRZ9255 ).
I would look on CNET. They review all things technology and you could find something that fits your budget and needs.

You can probably buy a decent headunit for $200 but amps and subs are expensive. MTX are very good. I also have a BOSS Class D amp (powers subs only) that is unbelievable. Alot depends on how big a car is and what size the OEM (stock) speakers are. Component sets (separate woofer and tweeter) are the best sounding but also fairly expensive, but cheaper Coaxial speakers (tweeter attached to woofer) are usually no better than what the car came with, in which case you are better off just changing the head unit and adding an amp and sub or two. The aftermarket headunit alone can make the stock speakers sound alot better. So if the highs from the stock speakers are OK just change the head unit, buy a 200 watt MTX amp and matching sub and box. Don't count on having pavement shaking equipment though. But you should have a much better sounding system. The addition of subs alone make a big difference. Most head units are 4X40watts or 4X50watts. Power your door and rear speakers (highs) with the power from the deck and run a RCA cable to an amp to power the subs (lows). Make sure the head unit has RCA jacks. Pioneer head units are known for not skipping on rough roads and over bumps. Any of the top makers have good equipment. ALPINE IS OVERRATTED though. HEADUNIT - Kenwood, Clarion, Sony, JVC, Fosgate, and Pioneer best, Alpine OK SUB/S - MTX, Fosgate, and Pioneer best. Kenwood, Alpine, and Infinity good. Sony no good 2-4 CHANNEL SPEAKER AMP (Class A/B can be used for highs, lows or both) - Kenwood, Orion, MTX, Fosgate, Alpine all very good. 1 CHANNEL SUBWOOFER AMP (Class D For subwoofers only) - Boss, MTX, Fosgate all excellent, Pioneer and Alpine are good too. 5 CHANNEL AMP (4 channel speaker + 1 channel sub amp) - MTX But very expensive and subwoofer channel usually weak. Another way is with a 4 channel amp that has dual High and Low pass filters. Basically it's 2 2 channel amps in one. Power a set of high power 6X9's, in the back, on one side of the amp and subs on the other side. Power the front speaker's with the deck. Infinity Reference component sets are very good. Component's should be in the front or both front and back. MTX are supposed to be good too but I've never heard them personally, Kenwood and Alpine also good. You could use a 4 channel amp to power the components in the front and the subs leaving the headunit (deck) to power the rears or have no rears at all. Or power the components (front) with the deck (no rears) and a amp for the sub. or like I said earlier power all the speakers (highs) with the deck and sub/s (lows) with an amp.
Speakers are electronic items used to produce sound. Best Buy is a retailer that sells speakers and speaker systems including iPod speakers, bookshelf speakers, outdoors speakers and subwoofer speakers.
