The heart muscle cells are collectively called the myocardium. It is involuntary unlike the skeletal muscles and is smaller and less circular. The cells normally have one centrally located nucleus and large mitochondria that inhabit 25% of the cytosolic space, compared to 2% in other muscle cells. The large number of myocardium is one of the reasons the heart is able to work continuously without long rest times. The cells have a stair step look with irregular connections to each other called intercalated disks. Desmosomes that strengthen and gap junctions that allow rapid communication are located in the intercalated disks. The gap junctions allow action potentials to move through the myocardium simultaneously. Special groups and pathways of autorhythmic or self-exciting cells connect the entire heart and cause the atrial and ventricular myocardium to contract in unison at the precise moment. Also unique to the myocardium is its ability to maintain a contraction form one action potential, unlike skeletal muscle that requires rapid repeat action potentials. Like skeletal muscle cells, the myocardium can be exercised for better health and function. It also has very limited regenerative and injury repair abilities and rarely undergoes mitosis.
