Christmas is a christian holiday celebrating the birth of Christ our Savior. Everything in this holiday from the presents to the star on the top of the tree are related to what we believe. The presents are not for just giving but to remember that Jesus was our first gift from God. He was sent to earth to be a holy man with no sin then to die on the cross for our sins. The tree is relevant because we place the star at the very top to show what led the wise men and herders to Christ so the top of the tree is pointing to that star.
All I can say is early Christians did not celebrate the birth of Christ on any day as being important. The day that was important and was celebrated was the day of his Resurrection, which was calculated as the Sunday following the Jewish Passover. However as the Jewish calendar is Lunar the date of Passover and thus the following Sunday on the Roman Solar calendar was different and hard to determine every year. This day is now called Easter.
Christmas, which means "Mass of Christ," began in the year -- commonly estimated between 2 and 7 B.C. -- that the baby Jesus was born.
Christmas is when Jesus Christ was born.
