Depends on your play style. I tend to do better with Fire-type starters and typically build my team around Typhlosion. Some people pick Chikorita to get Meganium and build their team around Meganium. Example is getting a Water-type pokemon later to cover his Fire-type weakness. Others pick Totodile to get Feraligatr and build their team around Feraligatr. Or you can choose your starter based off the first gyms—which type matchup is the best? Ooorrrr you can choose based on the pokemon you typically want on your team. Maybe you want to choose based off your favorite looks? Moves? Abilities? Any starter is good for meta games so you’ll do fine no matter what you pick. Most people will use Feraligatr or Typhlosion for PVP battles.
what starter? you already get a starter after you beated red.-_-
