The capital of Missouri was St. Charles at the time it was admitted into the Union. The city is situated on the west bank of the Missouri river about 27 miles west of the St. Louis Arch on the Mississippi river.
The Mississippi River defines the eastern border of the state of Missouri, and does not actually run through the state (as the Missouri River does) except where the river has created a few small islands.
Missouri is America's 24th state; it was admitted into the union on August 10, 1821. The name is also used for the Missouri River, the longest tributary of the Mississippi River.
