There are currently 14 stations of the cross. The 15th is a modern addition, not always displayed, but it is The Resurrection. The story of Calvary and Good Friday is told through the original stations. The modern Church, with its emphasis on new life and rejoicing, included the new station to end the Stations on a joyful meditation. Many conservative forces are appalled by this change, insisting that the Stations, once often done on the knees or in long pilgrimages, are penitential in nature and that one is supposed to come away from them reflecting on their sins and the sacrifice of Christ in order to spur true contrition and conversion of the soul. By ending it on the resurrection, the devotion is changed and loses its penitential edge.
There have been no recent additions to the traditional 14 Stations of the Cross. These stations, depicting various moments in Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, are a fixed set that has remained unchanged for centuries in the Catholic Church.
