George B. McClellan had a meteoric advance as a commander in the Union army. On April 23, 1961 he was appointed major general of volunteers. And, then on May 14, 1861 he was appointed to the position of major general of the regular army. At this point he was second in command to only General in Chief Winfield Scott. McClellan's rise continued when he became general in chief in November 1861 as General Winfield Scott retired.

What two events show the difference between grants and McClellan's approaches after victory?

After the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant favored reconciliation and integration of the Southern states into the Union, emphasizing a lenient approach to Reconstruction. In contrast, General George B. McClellan, who had a more cautious and conservative stance, advocated for a quicker restoration of the Union without extensive changes to Southern society or governance. This difference is highlighted in their post-war policies, with Grant supporting the Civil Rights Act and the 15th Amendment to secure rights for freed slaves, while McClellan's approach leaned towards restoring the pre-war status quo.

What was General George B McClellan's plan on the conduct of the US Civil War?

General George B. McClellan had his own plans for the conduct of the US Civil War. His plan centered around three points. These were the legal and military consequences of secession, the status of slavery, and the division of power between the presidency and a proposed "Commander in Chief of the Army.McClellan did not favor slavery, however, the fact that a substantial part of the US was in outright rebellion against the Federal government meant that there was a just cause that had to be addressed. If such was the case, then the issue of slavery was not part of a reconciliation between the North and the South. And, in order to prosecute the war in a logical and humane manner, the president only needed to be concerned with "Northern" issues. The newly appointed "Commander of the Army" would conduct the war in such a manner as to bring each side to the bargaining table.
