After the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation. This discouraged foreign governments from recognizing the Confederacy, because Lincoln had, with the proclamation, made the confederacy the poster child of slavery, and the people of the foreign countries that were considering recognizing the confederacy didn't want to be associated with the pro-slavery side of anything.

Foreign countries wanted to trade with Japan because the Japanies had valuable resources such as silk.
The Union feared Great Britain and France would recognise the Confederate States as a sovereign nation and intervene on their behalf. This meant these two countries would increase their aid to the South and raised the very real prospect of them sending troops to the battlefield. Had Lee and his army gained a victory on Union soil these fears would probably have come to pass. At best the battle was a draw. The Union however claimed Antietam a victory and Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The war took on a new complexion. Not only was it being fought to preserve the Union, but also to end slavery. Lincoln knew Great Britain and France would not fight against the abolition of slavery, thus the threat of foreign intervention disappeared.

After their loss in the Battle of Antietam countries like France and England no longer believed in a Confederate victory. They saw no point in intervening when a Union victory was much more plausible.
It was an unexpected Northern victory, which gave Lincoln the credibility to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which turned it into a war on slavery, so no foreign power could intervene on the side of the Confederates without looking pro-slavery.
