To protect whooping cranes, there are several whooping crane sanctuaries throughout the United States. One of these sanctuaries is located in Baraboo, Wisconsin. At this sanctuary, whooping cranes are monitored and their eggs are protected until they hatch. When the cranes are mature, they are released into the wild.
The steps to saving the Whooping crane is to open your eyes and pick up any litter you might see on the ground, because whooping cranes might think that garbage is food. Also if you happen to be a hunter....don't kill the Whooping crane, you never know you could be the reason why the Whooping crane became extinct. Imagine if you where a Whooping crane you wouldn't want to be shot, now would you?! didn't think so. So pretend you were a Whooping crane.
Whooping cranes aren't extinct, they are only endangered. Habitat destruction and overhunting are the causes of the decrease in their population. It is estimated that before the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, there were about 10,000 whooping cranes. Today, the estimate is that there are less than 400.
