It was called The New Deal. It focused on the 3 R's - Relief, Recovery and Reform.

The most useful idea was probably the establishment of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. There were a large number of jobs programs, some of which produced lasting benefits to the country. What really ended the depression was the military build-up and eventual US entry into World War II.

It was called the "New Deal"; however, the Great Depression didn't really end until the second world war, when there were a bunch of new jobs being made and GDP soared.
