First contact child support enforce on their procedures for modifying or discontinuing support. Take a woman with you to actually ask the question as sometimes they are less accommodating of men. If they have no procedure, you will need to file a motion to modify support with the court. This is similar to a normal modification of support, except you are asking to have support stopped. This can be done Pro Se.

What actions should the non custodial parent take to stop child support when the child reaches 18 and has graduated high school in nc?

At what age does child support payments end? Generally, the obligation ends when the child reaches 18 years of age. If the child is already otherwise emancipated, payments will stop at the time of emancipation. If the child is still in primary or secondary school when he or she reaches the age of 18, support payments will continue until that child graduates, ceases to attend school on a regular basis, fails to make satisfactory academic progress towards graduation or reaches the age of 20 - whichever of these comes first. Based on its discretion, the court may order payments to cease at age 18, regardless of graduation date or any other factors. Can you prorate the last month of child support?

Generally no. Further, the payments cannot be automatically stopped without a review of the courts. See related links below. If your court orders establishing child support has a end date spelled out such as "when the child reaches 18 and is graduated from high school" and this court order also contains language such as "no future orders of the court are required when this date is reach" then yes you can prorate the last month of child support to the last day the child is a minor and in this case graduated from high school. Also if your child support is being garnished by a child support office of a county then you will have to show that the conditions of the court order stopping child support on a specific date have happened and they will prorate your last garnishment for you. These States require child support paid into the college yearsArizona to age 21District of Columbia to age 21Iowa to age 22Massachusetts to age 22Missouri to age 22, with a requirement of 5 credit hours minimumNew Jersey to age 22Utah to age 21Washington to age 22 plus college expensesCaliforniaThe child support obligation continues past 18 years of age, as long as the child is unmarried, is a full-time high school student and is not self-supporting. In this case, the child support obligation will end when the child reaches 19 years of age or graduates high school, whichever of these occurs first.
