Scratching chicken pox sores can make the sores spread. Fingernails can also scratch the skin, creating tears in the skin which could allow bacteria to enter (in which case you'd have chicken pox plus an infected skin wound).

∙ 10y agoInitial symptoms include: fatigue, mild headache, fever up to 102 F, chills,
muscle or joint aches.
2-3 days following initial symptoms: red dots or splotches appear on skin
(first scalp, followed by chest, back, stomach, arms and legs).
A clear head will develop in center, resembling a pimple.
Blisters formed will then erupt and clear fluid leaks out.
New clusters of blisters can appear for up to 5 days.
Blisters turn to scabs that fall off after approximately 2 weeks.

∙ 12y agoYou don't. You develop antibodies that keep it in check. That is why many people who had chicken pox as a youth develop Shingles as adults - the antibodies stop keeping it in check as well.
