They used all types of stone usually but not exclusively local to where they were building. However sometimes they moved stone over large distances just because they liked the feel of it or it looked nice. Just like today really. Did you know that alot of Roman buildings were actually made from concrete and had real stone facades. Making the buildings stronger and cheaper to erect.
