After the Fall of Mexico City on September 1847, Mexico was forced to sign a peace treaty with the United States; otherwise it risked further territorial acquisitions, an possibly losing enough political and economic stability, that it would have fallen to European interests (especially to England and France).

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Spanish: Tratado de Guadalupe Hidalgo) is the peace treaty, largely dictated by the United States to the interim government of a militarily occupied Mexico, that ended the Mexican-American War (1846 - 1848). The cession that the treaty facilitated included parts of the modern-day U.S. states of Wyoming, Colorado, Oklahoma and Kansas as well as the whole states of California, Nevada, and Utah, and, depending on one's point of view, Texas.
