US military strategies are classified information. With that said, here is an example of an overall strategy of the Union during the US Civil War. Please note that during this war, strategies were altered based on conditions within the Union and various responses to the Confederate counter measures and in responsive to new strategies implemented by them during the war. The reasoning behind Union strategies can only outlined. To describe them in full would require a few volumes of works. Brief summary of the Union strategy early in the war: 1. Take control of the Mississippi River cutting off supplies from areas west of this river. Controlling this major river enabled the Union to land troops in enemy territory to the east and west of the river; 2. Blockading Confederate ports to hamper the South's ability to trade for military supplies and to hamper the South's exports of cotton; 3. Landing forces to create beach heads on the Southern coasts. These beach heads would cause the South to take troops from their field armies to guard against Union invasions; 4. Continually use troops to threaten Confederate centers of gravity such as Richmond and the Shenandoah Valley. The Union ( and the Confederacy ) derived the center of gravity idea and other strategic and tactical method from European military experts; 5. Maintain the border States to be either neutral or Union States; 6. Protect at all costs the Union capitol, Washington DC; and 7. Use the Union's superior numbers to launch major offensives at the same time. Please note this is a brief outline. It does not attempt to cover four years of war.
