"Island Hopping" .
To destroy the Naval power of the US and all its bordering Islands to be in control under the Japanese Navy. The Japanese may have had more then 1 reason to attack peral harbor but there strategy was to sink as many ships as possible, especially their main targets, aircraft carriers.
An Allied strategy in the Pacific of invading selected islands, and using them as bases to advance closer to Japan. By doing this, it spared many American Lives. It also was used to only attack islands that could be used for an advantage in the war.

They felt "entitled" to the islands of the Pacific. They were doing it to increase the land that they controlled.
Guadal Canal, Guam, Midway, The Mariannas Islands, The US Soloman Islands, Alaska, Iwo Jima, The Phillipines, Okinawa.
The attack took place while the inhabitants of the military base were asleep, this left them vulnerable hence making the attack so effective.
On April 18, 1942, Colonel James H.Doolittle led the first air raid on the Japanese home islands.
If the Japanese won the attack, the US wouldn't have any Power left in the pacific. This would allow the Japanese to take control of the dutch east indies and other islands rich with materials that they needed for the war.
They sent in aircrafts with bombs to attack different targets. They were trying to attack the military bases.
