They were originally not called the Northern Song and the Southern Song but present historians give them that name as their capitals are in the north and the south respectively.

Chaos was spread all throughout China, and Buddhism proved to be popular in Southern China where it stressed learning and philosophy. In north china Buddhist monks became advisers to barbarian tribe rulers. The separation of northern and southern china caused Buddhism to spread throughout northern and southern schools. I hope this proves to be helpful :)

The Liao Dynasty reigned in the northern part of China and was a barbaric tribe. The Dynasty that reigned the most of China was the Northern Song Dynasty.
