The diaphragm contracts, causing lower pressure in your ribcage than the outside air pressure, causing air to flow into the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxes, the air flows back out again.
Normally, you would think of contracting as getting smaller. The diaphragm is a little different... when it is relaxed, it is kind of shaped like a bowl placed upside down on a table. When it contracts, it "flattens", pulling the bottom of the "bowl" downwards. This causes a vacuum, pulling down on the lungs so that they can fill with air.
Without the rib cage surrounding the lungs, the diaphragm couldn't cause the vacuum needed to inhale.
