You must become a medical doctor first. This means a bachelor's degree and an medical degree (MD). Both take 4 years after high school. You then have to enter a specialty program (3-7 years depending on the specialty) and you must pass your national board exams and your state exams before you can practice. These years (med school on) are often called the 'lost 10 years'.
