Take the S shuttle train (color code grey) west across 42nd Street, from Grand Central (East 42nd) to Times Square (West 42nd).

At the Times Square Station, transfer to the Downtown 1-2-3 trains (the red line). You could also take the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) but this will require you to walk an extra block west underground (the A-C-E runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue. So there is a tunnel connecting the A-C-E to the Times Square Station, so you can transfer without exiting the subway system). It's easier to just take the 1-2-3.

Take the Downtown 1-2-3 or A-C-E ONE STOP, from Times Square (West 42nd) to Penn Station (West 34th).

The two subway stops that will drop you off closest to the NYU campus are:

The A-C-E (the blue line) to West 4th Street and 6th Avenue (the west side of the campus).

The N or R trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line) to 8th Street-New York University (drops you off at 8th Street and Broadway, at the north end of the campus).

You could also take the 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) to Astor Place (8th Street and 4th Avenue), which would drop you off a couple of blocks east of the northeast corner of the campus.

You can take the Downtown 6 train from Grand Central.

If you want to take the A-C-E to West 4th Street, then:

1) Take the S shuttle train (color code grey) west across 42nd, from Grand Central (East 42nd) to Times Square (West 42nd).

2) At the Times Square Station, walk through the tunnel that connects the Times Square Station to the A-C-E (the A-C-E runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue. So there is a tunnel connecting the A-C-E to the Times Square Station, so you can transfer without exiting the subway system).

3) Take the Downtown A-C-E to West 4th Street.

If you want to take the N or R trains, then:

1) Take the S shuttle train (color code grey) west across 42nd, from Grand Central (East 42nd) to Times Square (West 42nd).

2) At the Times Square Station, transfer to the Downtown N or R trains to 8th Street-NYU. Note that the R train will not stop at 8th Street-NYU from 11 PM to 5:30 AM.

Greenwich Street and where? Is is a rather long street.

Nevertheless - there is no subway that goes directly there.

The northern end of Greenwich St starts at 14th St just off 9th Avenue. From Grand Central take the 42nd St Shuttle "S" to Times Square. Follow the signs to the 1, 2 & 3 trains (uptown or downtown), from the 1, 2 &3 platform take the stairs down and follow the signs to the A, C & E trains. Take any one of those to 14th St station. Exit to the street and walk along 14th St toward the Hudson River to 9th Av. Greenwich ST will start on the left (south ) side of the street.

For Greenwich St in the address range of 600 (up or down), take the downtown 1 train to Houston St. Exit to the street and walk 2 blocks towards to the Hudson River to Greenwich St.

Also take the downtown 1 train to the following stations and walk 2 blocks toward the Hudson River to Greenwich St:

Addresses in the mid 400's - low 500's - Canal Street

Addresses in the mid 300's - low 400's - Franklin Street

Addresses in the mid-300's and below - Chambers Street (you can also take the 2, or 3 train from Times Square as they are express trains and Chambers is an express/local station).

Walk one block west, from Times Square (42nd Street between 7th Avenue and Broadway) to 8th Avenue.

Take the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 8th Avenue) to West 4th Street (at 6th Avenue).

One block east is McDougal Street, which is the western border of Washington Square Park. Washington Square Park runs west-east from McDougal Street to University Place, and south-north from West 4th Street to Waverly Place. Waverly Place is what would be West 7th Street, if there were a West 7th Street.

The heart of the NYU campus is located around Washington Square Park. The main campus is from 6th Avenue to Lafayette Street, and from West 3rd Street to West 8th Street.

Take the Uptown 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), one stop, from 42nd Street-Grand Central Station to 51st Street.

The 51st Street Station on the 6 train is connected to the Lexington Avenue-53rd Street Station on the E train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) and the M train (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line).

Take the Downtown E or M to West 4th Street (at 6th Avenue). Greenwich Village runs south to north from Houston Street to 14th Street, and west to east from 6th Avenue to 4th Avenue. East of 4th Avenue, from Houston to 14th, is the East Village, and west of 6th Avenue, from Houston to 14th, is the West Village.

The S shuttle train (color code grey) runs between Grand Central Station (East 42nd Street) and the Times Square Station (West 42nd Street).

At night, when the shuttle isn't running, you can take the 7 train (the purple line), 2 stops: 42nd Street-Times Square ---> 42nd Street-Bryant Park ---> 42nd Street-Grand Central.

What subway stations on the 6 line have operational restrooms?

According to Wikipedia and the MTA themselves, 77 of New York City's subway stations have working bathrooms, and 28 of these stations are in Manhattan. However, according to the Related Link (see below), in Manhattan, only 8 of these stations are actually functioning and open to the public (9 including "the developer-financed wonder bathroom at the Times Square Station"). The only one on the 6 line is the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station. There are also bathrooms at Grand Central Terminal, downstairs, near the food court. The 4-5-6 line stops at 42nd Street-Grand Central Station, but Grand Central Station is the subway station, while Grand Central Terminal is the railroad station. So, you would have to exit the subway system to use the bathroom, and then pay another fare to get back on the subway.

Is Grand Central Terminal in New York City's Penn Station?

Grand Central Station & Terminal are located at East 42nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. Grand Central Terminal is the railroad terminal, for trains that are not part of the New York City subway system (like MetroNorth commuter trains).
