Times Square

How did Time Square get its name?

In 1904 the New York Times lobbied to get the formerly "Longacre Square" renamed to Times Square after the NY Times building that was there. They celebrated the name change with a large New Year's Eve celebration - and a tradition was born.

Why was Times Square called Lansdowne Square?

It wasn't called Lansdowne Square. It was called Longacre Square. Why? I don't know.

Around 1878 the section of Broadway and 7th Avenue in Manhattan was the city's carriage-trade center, and was then known as Longacre Square -- Longacre being the carriage center in London. In a couple of decades, theaters would begin moving into the Longacre Square area from their old center at Union Square, and the carriage trade would greatly suffer from the advent of the "horseless carriage." In 1904 Longacre Square was officially renamed Times Square, after the New York Times Building, that became the cornerstone of the new district.

Which subway do you take from Times Square to Central Park?

Central Park is 2.5 miles long and 0.5 miles wide, so it really depends on where in the park you want to go.

FYI, the portion of 110th Street that borders the park is called Central Park North, the portion of 59th Street that borders the park is called Central Park South, and the portion of 8th Avenue that borders the park is called Central Park West. However, for some reason, the portion of 5th Avenue that borders the park is not called Central Park East.

You can take the Uptown 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 42nd Street-Times Square to 59th Street-Columbus Circle (at the southwest corner of the park).

You can take the Uptown N-R-Q-W (the yellow line) from 42nd Street-Times Square to 5th Avenue-59th Street (at the southeast corner of the park).

You can take the Uptown 2 or 3 trains from 42nd Street-Times Square to 110th Street-Central Park North (at the north end of the park, towards the middle but closer to the east end).

You can walk through the tunnel that connects the 42nd Street-Times Square Station to the 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal Station, and take the Uptown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority to any of the following stops along Central Park West: 59th Street-Columbus Circle, 72nd Street, 81st Street-Museum of Natural History, 86th Street, 96th Street, 103rd Street, or 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway (at the northwest corner of the park).

Walk one block west, from Times Square (42nd Street between 7th Avenue and Broadway) to 8th Avenue.

Take the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 8th Avenue) to West 4th Street (at 6th Avenue).

One block east is McDougal Street, which is the western border of Washington Square Park. What is the year and approximate value of a Sweet 16 that appears new with gold inlaid engraving very nice wood and has the square pistol grip serial 7S over 603xx with no box or papers?

Most Browning Sweet sixteen are worth between $500 to $800. Vent rib barrells are higher in Value. If it is made in Beligum, the serial numbers match on the barrell and the receiver,90% original, Vent Barrel it could be worth up to $1000. Just because a gun is an A5 made by Browning does not make it a Sweet Sixteen. The standard 16ga Browning was made from 1906 until long after the Sweet Sixteen came out in 1937. To value your gun we would have to know the Grade, serial #,barrel configuration and most inportantly the condition. The gun could be worth from $50 to many thousands of dollars. A mint Grade IV 1922 16ga just sold for $6200 last weekend and it was not even a Lightweight (that is the gun that preceded the sweet Sixteen). The gun was made in 1967. If it is all original and correct, it would sell for $800 and possibly over $1000 to the right group of buyers. In 1967, Browning ony made the Sweet Sixteen in a Grade I model. Any Gold inlay would be aftermarket unless this is a custom order through Browning. Gold inlay is a red flag that says "get this to a professional" for appraisal, to have them check it out. It may be a golden colored filling rubbed into the standard engaving which could hurt value.

What was or is the place in the Pullman community with the old Coca-Cola fountain service sign?

It's on South St. Lawrence just south of 112TH. I was in the Pullman area over ten years ago and remember thinking it was cool. Just when I was about to give up, I found a site that said it was once Bob's Sugar Bowl. That brought me to this: http://blogs.suntimes.com/neighborhoods/2007/04/meet_mike_mcgraw_pullmans_fred.html You can see it from Google's Street View if you enter the store address.
