The basic supplies you will need are: a pair of scissors, a ruler and a design or template for cutting out the pieces. To piece the quilt, you only need a needle and thread plus a lot of time.

Most quilters today in the United States use a sewing machine to piece together quilts.

For your first quilt, the easiest fabric is 100% cotton woven as a calico or a quilting cotton. However, you can use old T-shirts (these have a lot of stretch so you have to stabilize them to keep them from distorting), denim (very heavy, particularly at the intersection of the seams), flannel (very warm, but again can distort easily), or pretty much any fabric you like. Quilting is a just technique that stitches two or more layers of fabric on top of each other, so you can quilt shirts, purses, curtains or anything else you think of.

The usual materials used for quilting are cotton calico fabric, cotton batting and cotton thread. Poly-blend batting also is widely used, but has not retained its loft over the years as well as cotton batting. Wool batts and most recently bamboo batts are also used.

What happened to quilting bee?

Many quilting clubs, guilds and women's groups continue to have quilting bees. However, early in the 20th Century, the abundance of inexpensive manufactured blankets and bedspreads made the homemade quilt less of a household essential and more of a treasured heirloom. During and after the Second World War, increasing numbers of women took jobs outside the home and had less time or need to sew their bed coverings themselves. Whereas the quilting bee turned a slow, difficult chore into a social occasion, today the practice of quilting is a hobby and an art form.
