The town of Mildura in north western Victoria was named after the first sheep station in the area, Mildura, which is believed to have taken its name from a Latje Latje aboriginal word meaning "red earth".
The river is the Darling, and it joins the Murray at Wentworth, on the Victoria-New South Wales border. The Darling itself does not start in Queensland, but its basin is in western Queensland. Its source is at Brewarinna, north of Bourke in far western NSW.
