What are the conditions for total internal reflection to take place?

Light must travel from the optically denser medium to the optically less dense one. For total internal reflection to occur, the angle of incidence in the optically denser medium must be greater than the critical angle of that medium. The critical angle is that angle of incidence in the optically denser medium for which the angle of refraction is 90o.

Why does a light ray bend toward the normal?

During refraction, light follows particle nature. When a pair of light particles, attracted to each other, travel from a rarer medium to a denser medium obliquely, the particle that reaches the denser medium first, slows down. As a result, the light ray bends towards the first particle, which is nearer to the normal. Hence when light passes from a rarer medium to a denser medium, it bends towards the normal. A similar situation takes place when light travels from denser medium to a rarer medium, where light moves away from the normal. Also, when a light ray with an incident angle of 90 degree enters(passes through) a substance (medium) with higher or lower density, higher or lower index of reflection, that light ray will NOT bend.

When light travels from a denser medium to less dense medium how is it possible in case of a mirrage?

The air just close to the surface of hot earth will be less dense where as the air well above will be comparatively cooler and more dense. As light from a tree top travels towards the surface has to go right from denser to rarer and so total internal reflection takes place and reaches the observer as if the image of the tree top is seen on the surface of the earth. This is mirage.

Why phase change of 180 takes place when wave enter from rarer medium to denser medium?

The displacement is a peculiar state, due to the fact that this is one of the special situations in which energy is completely destroyed and conservation of energy does not take place; hence the phase change

When does the refraction takes place?

Refraction of light takes place where a beam of light passes from one medium to another and the speed of light in those two media is different.

What happens to the speed of light as light travels though materials?

The speed of light is not affected by the density of the medium. Its the path of the light that is affected . Phenomenon like reflection or refraction take place when the light goes to different medium

When light enters in medium 2 from medium 1 the angle of incidence is always greater than the angle of refraction Could total internal reflection take place from medium 1 to medium 2?

Definitely possible asmedium 2 is found rarer compared to medium 1

Why total internal reflection takes place?

It happens when light travels through a material that has a greater "optical density" (refraction index, really) than a bordering material, and when it touches the surface at an angle that is sufficiently flat.

What happens to the light ray when the angle of incidence is greater than the angle of total reflection?

it is not the angle of total reflection, it is the critical angle. and when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle, total internal reflection takes place and as it is necessary for total internal reflection to take place that the ray must travel from denser to rarer medium so, when it occurs, the ray is reflected bach into the denser medium.

Why does sound travel faster through denser materials?

sound unlike light requires a medium to travel.sound propagates from one place to other by causing molecules to vibrate, as molecules of solid are closest vibration produced is maximum, hence speed is maximum

Caused by light refraction in the atmosphere?

Mirage is a good example which is seen due to refraction of light and especially due to total internal reflection. ============================ A semi-opposing opinion: No reflection is required for the creation of a mirage, only refraction. ============================= Hope you might have heard about the conditions for total internal relection to take place. 1) Ray has to traverse from denser to rarer 2) the angle of incidence is to be more than critical angle of the denser medium So in such a case the refraction phenomenon cannot take place and so all the energy to be refracted is sent back to the denser medium itself. Hence named as total internal reflection. Of course total internal reflection is totally different from ordinary reflection.

Refraction of light takes place where a beam of light passes from one medium to another and the speed of light in those two media is different.

Why double refraction takes place?

It happens when light enters different mediums, causing it to 'shift speeds'
