What teachers can do to help children with dyslexia?

My brother had Dyslexia all his life but wasn't diagnosed until his teens. He refused the diagnosis and now owns his own fashion company. He does have his own unique language but his team adapt around him.. His advice The struggle of being put, in those days, special or remedial class was so horrendous and degrading he decided he would adapt. Tell a child you can.. really hope it helps

If a student is struggling with reading difficulties, the most important thing is to locate the primary cause of the problem. In general, there are around 7 causes that could be contributing factors. A child could have just one cause, or a combination.

1) Optilexia or an auditory deficit - This happens when you see a child sight-reading and guessing instead of decoding a word. Usually, this child is a bright visual learner and so has stopped using the auditory function to read a word (i.e. they are not engaging with the sounds, just the visual representation of a word). To fix this you need to help the child learn to engage with the sounds or phonemes within a word.

2) Eye-tracking weakness - Many people with reading difficulties find it hard to read smaller text. They find themselves tiring frequently, losing their place or skipping words. To fix this you need to do some exercises to strengthen those eye muscles.

3) Irlen Syndrome - This is a problem that some people have processing the contrast between black text on white paper. This causes the words to move around on the page. To fix this, you can use colored overlays or tinted glasses.

4) Poor memory - Short-term memory is constantly in use when we read. If there is a weakness there it can cause difficulties in reading quickly and fluently. To fix this you need to break down and repeat the reading tasks until it becomes an automated procedure that doesn't tax the short-term memory

5) Fluency block - Some children can decode brilliantly but really struggle to blend words together. This is trick to fix but you can practice improving with anagrams and by re-reading text until it is fluent

6) Attention issues - ADHD is far too common a diagnosis but some young children do have problems sitting still. To help with this keep reading practice down to 10-15 minutes slots and make sure that they have plenty of exercise!

7) Stress - When a child is stressed about reading, the brain actually blocks the learning process as a part of its fight-or-flight stress response. To fix this, the reading process needs to be full of encouragement and small achievable goals. once confidence has improved, so does reading.

Children with dyslexia can learn to read better by studying in quiet spaces. Encouraging children to read and supporting them while reading can help the kids do better at reading.
