"Gatorade" is named after the University of Florida Gators. It was there in 1965 that then Gators football head coach Ray Graves asked the Univeristy of Florida College of Medicine to come up with a hydrating replacement for fluids lost by players during games. Gatorade was the end result of their research, and was subsequently used by the Gators during their games.
The Florida Gators credit their 1967 Orange Bowl win over the Georgia Yellow Jackets as having helped them win the game, a sentiment echoed by the Yellow Jackets head coach. Later that year, agreements were made with Stokely-Van Camp, Inc., to process, package, and distribute Gatorade, and the NFL entered into a licensing arrangement for its use in the league.

It was first concocted by a team doctor for the University of Florida Gators football team.
The Florida Gators created the beverage and were the first to use it. Go Gators! =P
Yes, four doctors were asked by Florida's head coach Ray Graves to help his players handle the intense Florida heat and humidity. Their answer was Gatorade, first tested on the freshmen team.
The Gators football coach, at the time, Ray Graves, was frustrated with the performance of his players, during the hot summer football practices, and asked the team doctor, for his insight. His research team, came across the unique mix of water, sodium, sugar, potassium, phosphate, and lemon juice that is now known as Gatorade in honor of the football team, the Gators. The football team credited Gatorade with their first Orange Bowl win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, in 1967, and the drink became an instant phenomenon. Yellow Jackets coach Bud Carson, when asked why they lost, replied: "We didn't have Gatorade. That made the difference."

Gatorade after the Florida gators
The University of Florida invented Gatorade to properly hydrate the football team. They wanted an advantage over the teams that just drank water. They named it "Gatorade" because they are known as the Florida Gators.
Players needed to hydrate during the game so they used Gatorade to help them.
