One thing that many people claim was inspired by Star Trek is the cell phone. But that is totally wrong as Bell Labs came up with the idea back in 1947, nineteen years before Star Trek appeared on TV in 1966! But Bell Labs put the project on hold after a few years of work as the vacuum tube technology of the time could not support the requirements of such a system. When the first handheld cell phone was built by Motorola in 1971 it bore no resemblance to anything in Star Trek as it was about the size and weight of a brick and could only run about 1 hour on a battery charge.
