look at howStuffworks.com they have a good info on it with all the history. but engine has high compression that makes the cylinder temp reach about 1000 degrees F and fuel is injected and top dead center of commpression stroke atimosing (spelling means tinny drops of fuel) fuel and combustion happens. if cylinder temp is not hot enough it will not inginte the fuel air mix. diesel draw in air all the time inject fuel in cylinder. gas inject fuel in intake with air and draws in air fuel mix into cylinder and used spark plug to start fire.
