To properly refill a Zippo lighter with Zippo lighter fluid, follow these steps: Remove the lighter from its case and open the lid. Hold the lighter upside down and remove the insert from the case. Slowly pour the Zippo lighter fluid into the cotton batting inside the insert, being careful not to overfill. Allow the fluid to soak into the cotton for a few minutes. Reinsert the insert back into the case and close the lid. Wipe off any excess fluid and let the lighter sit for a few minutes before using it.
before you put the wick in you need to get a little bowl of zippo fluid. Soak the wick in it for 5 minuets then allow it to dry then insert it into the zippo and then add zippo fluid to the lighter and set upsdie down for 5min then flip over and dry off top and use zippo. That simple. Your Friend David davidbtamplen@yahoo.com
Hell yes. Looks cool though on a brushed one.You get lighter (as in less dark) spots on it when the Black ice comes off.

To fix the wick in a Zippo lighter, you will need to first empty the fuel from the lighter. Then, use a small pair of tweezers to pull the old wick out from the bottom, trim it using scissors, and insert a new one. Be sure to adjust the wick to the desired length before refueling the lighter.

OR it depends on how its broke. you can replace the flint which is sold in most wallmarts or gas stations or you can replace the wick which you can usally find at the places i listed above.
I would try Naptha (zippo lighter fluid) or Acetone. Neither should harm the polyester, but will eat through the goo.
if it is in fact a true zippo it should have the zippo logo stamped in metal on the bottom
Relax. The lighter fluid that accidentally spilled over the side can be wiped off. The rest will evaporate in a few minutes. When you replace the lighter in the case, allow a couple of seconds for the fluid to evaporate off the flint and the wick. Then try to strike it. If the flint does not spark, wait a few seconds more. The lighter fluid is not dangerous unless it is near a heat source. Wash your hands and then try to light the lighter again. It is fine if you overfill; the lighter won't work until the excess has evaporated.
A butane (Thunderbird) insert is better because the fuel is cheaper and it is air tight so the fuel doesn't evaporate like a normal one. there are two types of insert, one is a soft fame (like one from a Bic lighter) and the other has a torch flame (like one off a blow torch but not as intense). the Thunderbird might be better but it is all down to preference.
Don't panic! Open the lighter, take it out of the case and let it dry out for a couple of days. Then fill it with lighter fluid, spin the wheel backward to clean the flint off, and see if it lights. The problem is that alchohol in the aftershave won't ignite in a lighter. Let it evaporate for a couple of days, it should take care of the problem.
