They gave Serbia an ultimatum which said that if they didn't stop trying to be independent then they would go to war with them, of course this then led to the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the start of the first world war.
No. WW1 had began due to the assassination Franz Ferdinand and his wife who was heir to the Austria-Hungary throne. Due to the assassination several demands were made or else war was declared.

The assassination was the last straw in the disputes between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Austria-Hungary gave Serbia no chance and made their demands and threatened that noncompliance would lead to an invasion. Russia joined the side of Serbia and France joined Russia. Russia mobilization to the German border brought in Germany. Etc Etc.
Austria-Hungary's demands from Serbia basically questioned Serbia's sovereignty and called upon the dissolution of the country. That is why Serbia did not accept the ultimatium and that is why Austria-Hungary declared war, starting World War I.

after they failed to agree to a list of demands from austria after a serbian nationalist assassinated Franz Ferdinand.
Where did World 1 start? There is no single cause of World War 1 but following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife, Austria-Hungary presented a series of demands to Serbia. Austria-Hungary decided that Serbia's response was insufficient and invaded Serbia. This triggered off a complex set of mutual defence agreements. Within weeks Austria-Hungary, Germany were at war with Russia, France, and Britain. (Turkey would follow later.)
