How do toxins build up in food chain?

The toxins which are built up in food chain are the toxins which consist of heavy metals such as led, cadmium, mercury. since most of the agrochemicals contain these heavy metals, they tend to accumulate in the food chain. Once a heavy metal get into a body of an animal, it will be deposited in fat tissues thus it cannot be eliminated therefore with increase intake of those heavy metals ,more and more heavy metals accumulate in the food chain. Apart from those toxins food cantain naturally occurring toxins as well.

How does the DDT originnaly enter the food chain?

DDT originally enters the food chain through runoff from agricultural fields or from direct application to crops. It can then be absorbed by plants and accumulate in the tissues of animals that eat these plants. This process is known as bioaccumulation.

Why animals at the top of a food chain are particularly at risk from poison in the environment?

This is biological magnification; the concentration of poison in the environment gets higher and higher as it goes up the food chain. The poisons are kept in the bodies of the animals that eat them. They are not broken down or eliminated. So a predator that is higher up the chain gets a lot of the poison from its food. -Shawney M.
