As far as I can see, they didn't. Nixon was more corrupt than the media told us--I guess they figured you couldn't handle the truth. If you want a presidency that was wrongly effected by the media, look to Ronald Reagan. Reagan's administration, as judged by the number of people in it who were indicted, was THE most corrupt administration to date with something like 175 indicted members. The media put a halo on Reagan because he was publicly a nice man who made Americans feel good. If the media was doing its job, Reagan would have lasted about a year.
Ronald Reagan and Franklin Roosevelt
Easy example from the joke archives of the Cold war: Reagan and Gorbachev ran a race. Reagan came first, Gorbachev came second. American media reported that Reagan beat Gorbachev, showing true American competitive spirit. Soviet media reported: President Gorbachev secured a wonderful silver medal. Reagan came next-to-last. Both true. The sad on the funny, you see it too often.

In the Reagan Diaries, Ronald Reagan expresses his opposition to the fairness doctrine, viewing it as an infringement on free speech and a governmental overreach into media regulation. He believed that the doctrine, which required broadcasters to present opposing viewpoints on controversial issues, stifled honest debate and restricted the ability of media outlets to operate freely. Reagan argued that the marketplace of ideas should determine the success or failure of media content, rather than government mandates. His stance reflects a broader commitment to conservative principles regarding limited government intervention in the media.

Media autonomy is the media's ability to decide what news will be given to the public. It thrives when there is less Propaganda and censorship from the government.
