This question can be referencing the molecular compounds of sodium chloride (NaCl) and carbon dioxide (CO2). Sodium Chloride (table salt) is strongly held together at the atomic/molecular level by ionic bonds. In contrast carbon dioxide has shared electrons through covalent bonding.

Sodium (Na) has a single electron in it's outer shell. All atoms like to have completely full shells. Chlorine (Cl) has seven electrons in it's outer shell and is missing one. So Sodium shares it's electron with Chlorine easily. The positive charge on the Sodium now pulls the Chlorine close to it in a single atom bond. Nitrogen (N) has five electrons in it's outer shell and is missing three. For Sodium to bond with Nitrogen, There must be three Sodium atoms nearby to share their electrons making a molecule of Na3N.

Nitrogen forms a compound NCl3 with chlorine. It is an unstable yellow liquid. It has nitrogen covalently bonded to chlorine and has a similar shape to ammonia.

Sodium and chlorine react to form NaCl, common salt, a stable white solid. NaCl is ionic, Na+ Cl-.

simple explanation--sodium is a metal, chlorine is a non metal so NaCl is ionic, nitrogen is a non metal, chlorine is a non metal so so NCl bond is covalent.

A more sophisticated explanation is that the electronegativities of N and Cl are 3.04 and 3.16 so the electron is shared and the bond is slightly polar.

The electrons in Cl2 are being shared between each other (covalent bond).

The Na in NaCl has 11 electrons, and the Cl in NaCl has 17 electrons, so the Sodium will give the extra electron to the Chlorine, to complete its valence shell. This is an ionic bond (between a metal and a non-metal).

Salt (NaCl) is white, solid, salty, soluble in water, usually found in small granules, etc. Sodium (Na) is a silver/white, highly reactive alkali metal. Chlorine (Cl) is a greenish gas, and a halogen.

Which element form ionic bond?

If the difference of electronegativity between two atoms of two elements is very large, when more the difference of ionisation potential between the two atoms, and the value of electron affinity is higher, if one element is metal and the other is a non-metal.......then there are chances of formation of a chemical bond between the elements. For e.g. bonding between Na and Cl. Mg and O. Ca and Cl. Fe and S. and so on.

What elements would be likely to form an anion Ar or Cl or Na and Ne?
