The way a church becomes a basilica depends on your denomination. Originally the term basilica described a type of architecture. It was a building with a large nave. The walls stood two or three stories high and the roof arched between them. In the Greek Orthodox Church, a building with this style is still called a basilica. In the Roman Catholic Tradition, any church can be called a basilica if the pope calls it one.
A church may be called a basilica because of a particular event (miracle, pilgrimage) or because there are relics in it. The name is largely honorific and the right to be called basilica is given by the Pope. A church may be called a cathedral when it is the seat of the diocese (and hence headed by a bishop), which is not the case for the basilica of the Sacré-Coeur.
The principal church in the Vatican is Saint Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world.
Wambierzyce Basilica Church was created in 1710.
Its said that god blesses the people who pray in the basilica church.
The main Church in the Vatican is called St. Peter's Basilica as it is built on the tomb of St. Peter the Apostle.
The status of basilica is conferred by papal brief.
